Party like it’s 1773!

December 16, 2023 marks the 250th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, perhaps America’s most iconic event.

The anniversary happens to fall on a Saturday, but you can celebrate it anytime.

Round up those who cherish America’s founding, then plan to party like it’s 1773!

Below are ideas from which you can choose to mark this historic event.

Don’t forget you can delegate, including to the younger folks for whom this can be an enjoyable learning experience.

Find helpers to . . .

  • oversee the décor
  • find music (online, etc.) &/or a musician
  • oversee making/getting the food
  • serve the food & keep the table stocked
  • setup chairs, tables, etc.
  • cleanup after the party
  • oversee all-things technical (online music, a slideshow, audio equipment, etc.)
  • create trivia questions about the Boston Tea Party
  • order copies of The Spirit of a Revolution
  • contact Cam Molineux about being involved
  • (Extra mile: Have someone dressed up as a founding father to greet your guests, serve the food, roam around giving bits of historical trivia, etc.)

Décor

  • A clay pot/mug filled with small America flags
  • Lanterns–don’t forget the matches.
  • Streamers: red, white, & blue or another color theme
  • Frame pictures (you find on the internet) of the Boston Tea Party, Boston Massacre, etc.
  • A whole pineapple, a symbol of a merchant’s successful voyage to the Caribbean. (Extra mile: Search online for ways to cut it decoratively.)
  • 18th Century ships: pictures, model (e.g., in a bottle), or display the front cover of Cam’s book.
  • Brainstorm or gather additional ideas from others with a knack for this sort of thing.

Ambiance

  • Music: Play patriotic or colonial music (from the internet or by a musician in your group) throughout or at some point during the event. (Extra mile: Put together a patriotic/colonial slideshow & set it to run automatically throughout the party, either on a computer or on a big screen.)
  • Give out door prizes randomly or for correct answers to Boston Tea Party trivia questions. Prize ideas: items you use for décor (small flags, etc.), a signed copy of The Spirit of a Revolution (purchased directly from author below), etc.
  • Have everyone recite the Pledge of Allegiance then listen to this patriotic music video by Home Free.
  • Encourage folks to wear red, white, & blue &/or come dressed as their favorite founding father.
  • Encourage “Huzzahing” throughout the event.
  • (Extra mile: Have someone offer to pin a sprig of rosemary onto guests’ clothing as its fragrance helped cover body odors during colonial times.).

Food: most of these are finger foods or can be eaten with a toothpick

  • Punch (Extra mile: Float something decorative, even eatable, in the punch bowl.)
  • Hot tea & point out the irony of it due to the focus of this party
  • English cheeses & crackers
  • Nuts
  • Cookies: shortbread, sugar or molasses
  • Cheese wafers
  • Mini-muffins: apple-cinnamon, raisin, or molasses
  • Fruitcake (may require plasticware to eat)
  • Pineapple chunks
  • Paper plates, toothpicks &/or plasticware, & cups. (Extra mile: Include silver, pewter, wood, & a Paul Revere bowl somewhere on the table.)
  • (Extra mile: shrimp in a bowl of ice covered with leafy greens; cocktail sauce).
  • (Extra mile: crabmeat & melba toast)
  • (Extra mile: sausage balls)
  • (Extra mile: cocktail sausage with sauce, kept warm in a crockpot)
  • (Extra mile: Include decorative notes on the serving table related to the Paul Revere bowl, significance of the pineapple, etc.).

Historical Significance

  • Read excerpts from The Spirit of a Revolution.
  • Better yet, have folks read the entire book in the weeks leading up to your event.(Contact the author below for bulk discounts.) At the party, ask readers who their favorite characters were & why.
  • Invite author Cam Molineux as a special guest (virtually/live, via a prerecorded video, or in-person) to share historical tidbits, read an excerpt from or autograph her book, help select door-prize winners, etc..

Send out an invitation & you’re good to go!

Let Cam know how it goes—pictures would be a delight to see!
